"Queer" was originally written in 1952 but it was not published till 1985. It is a self-portrait of Burroughs that is political, a love story and a collection of fantasies. Set in Mexico City during the early fifties, "Queer" is about William Lee as he goes from bar to bar hopefully to quench the desire in him. The book is a brutally honest look at what being gay in America was like in the `50's and before. We see how much lust and desire can destroy a person. The story is one of unreciprocated feelings and how loneliness can cause a person to withdraw into himself. The book was banned for many years because of both the sexual and political contact. Burroughs uses stories as conduits for his sarcasm and absurdist sense of humor.
